This brand new, fine art print is of a custom hand embroidered piece created by Mary O’Sullivan. The original artwork is composed of black cotton thread hand embroidered on a cotton drill fabric base; the texture of which is delicately seen in the print pictured here. The design features one of Limerick’s most iconic land marks, King Johns Castle, along with the slogan “Stab City” and “Est. 1989”.

The term “Stab City” refers to Limerick’s textile and garment making history, most notably Limerick Lace. You can see within the intricate detail of the “S” and “C”, a sewing needle is within each letter. “Est 1989” refers to the first time that Limerick was called “Stab City” on air by Gabriel Byrne’s famous “The Late Late Show”.

The intention behind this piece was a reclamation of a term that was meant to harm the city. To empower anyone with a connection to Limerick that it’s a city and county to be proud of, and to highlight its sometimes forgotten magnificent history.

The piece was first sketched in pencil and pen on paper over many hours, which was then manually transferred onto fabric and thread through the artistic medium of hand embroidery. Mary did not time how long the piece took to execute, but it is safe to say it was well over the 40 hour mark to draw, transfer, and embroider.

You can see from the detail and time it took to create, the care and respect that went into creating this artwork. This print is sure to add a touch of humour, history and a love for Limerick to any wall, especially for any history lover or for Irish living abroad.
